Member Sailing and Paddling Opportunities

SEA offers a number of ways for members to get out on the water and do more sailing.

  • Sailing a small boat during open sails (every other weekend throughout the year)

  • Using our keelboats during open sail or other times.

  • Paddling on the bay in one of our kayaks

  • Joining a crew sail opportunity.

Click the “+” next to each opportunity for descriptions and general details

  • SEA’s ongoing sailing opportunities for graduates of Intro to Sailing and Sail Camp classes are invited to join us for Open Sails. Participants need to be members and purchase a Sail Card. Open Sail participants can use the SEA small boats like the Quests, Catalinas, and Zests. Some open sails include fun activities like tours of other sailing clubs or informal races. Hosts for open-sails provide help with rigging. Are available to tow sailboats out and back from the dock and are on the water in a safety boat for the whole open-sail period.

In order to offer open sailing on the SEA fleet of Catalinas, RS Quests, and Picos, SEA offers members Sail Cards. Sail Cards are an inexpensive way to get out on the water in our fleet as often as you want.

    • Requirements: You must be a member sail during open sail and have completed Intro to Sailing or Checkout. Youth must have completed Sail Camp Basic or attend Open Sail with a parent.

    • Dates and Times: Open sails are from 10-2 in the spring, summer, and fall, and from 12-3 in the winter. All dates and times are listed in our calendar.

    • Location: Loch Lomond Marina

    • Cost: Open sail is free for members. Members who want to bring guests pay $20 per guest.

  • Purchasing a keelboat membership entitles you to use our keelboats on the bay. You will need to contact Joe so he can put it on the schedule. A keelboat also covers use of dinghys during open sail. Use of keelboats requires completion of an extensive checkout process. You must review and agree to the terms.

    • Benefits: Unlimited use of keelboats (pending availability)

    • Requirements: Members must be fully checked-out on any vessel chartered. Overnight use of keelboats is not permitted.

  • You can take out one of our kayaks anytime if you have been checked out by Joe. Send an email to president@sfsailing.org to reserve them and also let us know when you are back.

  • To better facilitate member to member connections for sailing, SEA has created a new crew email group. This is for SEA members who are looking to crew or looking for crew whether for sailing SEA boats or their own.

    • If you are looking for someone to join you at open sail, or want someone to come out with you on our keelboat, or have your own boat and are looking for people to join you - this group is for you!

    • If you are trying to get out sailing more often and don't know who else is looking to sail, or you want to get more time on the water, but feel like you need to go out with someone more experienced - this group is for you!

To join members can email the Program Director (programdirector@sfsailing.org)

Workdays, seminars, and field trips

SEA volunteers occasionally offer members additional educational and engagement opportunities including

  • Workdays to help maintain our fleet: A great way to learn about how to care for our boats, get to know other members, and help keep us afloat at the same time.

  • Seminars to learn more about sailing and sailboats: There’s always more to learn about sailing. Our board and many volunteers have decades of experience to share. We plan to offer casional seminars about different topics.

  • Field trips around the bay: There is a much larger community of sailing clubs and sailing organizations around the Bay area. We plan to offer field trips to other clubs and destinations.

Stay tuned for dates and details!
